Solution to Uninstall Error 1721

You may find the following error appear on your screen when you attempt to use Add or Remove Programs utility to uninstall a program in your Microsoft Windows XP computer.


“Error 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personal or package vendor.”

How to Fix it?

To fix the uninstall error 1721, you need to unregister and re-register the Windows Installer Service. After that, uninstall the program. If the error still exists, run the command of the System File Checker (SFC).

How to reregister the Windows Installer Service

The Windows Installer Service governs the installation as well as uninstallation of programs in your Windows computer. If the Windows Installer is wrongly registered or if its registration information gets damaged, you cannot uninstall programs which are installed by Windows Installer.


To unregister and reregister the Windows Installer Service, do as follows:

  • Reboot your computer and tap F8 when seeing the BIOS information.
  • Choose the Safe Mode option by arrow keys and click Enter.
  • Log in your PC as Administrator.
  • Open Start and then select Run.
  • Input cmd in the Open box and click Enter.
  • Input msiexec u/unregister when prompted and click Enter.
  • When prompted, input msiexec/register and click Enter.
  • Input exit and click Enter to stop command prompt.
  • Open Start and then choose Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • From the window that opens, locate and choose the program you would like to uninstall and then press Remove.

If the error still exists when uninstalling the program, then take steps described in the next part.

How to run the System File Checker (SFC) command

The System File Checker is a command-line tool that can be used to scan the protected operating system files to verify their version and intactness. When the System File Checker some damaged files or some protected files with wrong version, it will substitute a correct file for the damaged one from the initial Windows Installation disc or the cache folder.


To run System File Checker command, do as follows:


Note: To run the sfc command, you need to log in your computer as an Administrator. Then you may receive prompted command, asking you to insert the initial Windows XP Installation CD. Therefore, make sure that you get your Windows XP installation disc beforehand.

  • Open Start and then select Run.
  • Input cmd and click Enter.
  • When prompted, input sfc /purgecache and click Enter.
  • When you have successfully run the above command, input sfc /scannow when prompted and then click Enter.
  • Input exit and click Enter.

After the above steps, you can uninstall the program by the Add or Remove Programs utility.
