When you try to install updates on your Microsoft Windows Vista computer, you may find following error 646 on your screen.

What Causes this Error?
Error 646 arises when there is something wrong with the Windows Update agent file Wups2.dll. Generally, the file gets wrong because it is inappropriately registered in your computer registry. When updating, the system cannot find the registry files that are in accord with wups2.dll.

How to Fix it?
To fix this issue, you can register the Windows Update files by hand. If you still cannot install those updates on your computer, you’d better download and then install the Windows Update agent.
Method 1: Register the Windows Update files by hand
Warning: You are supposed to take the following steps seriously since the registry is essential to the Windows operating system. Inappropriate editing of the registry may result in huge damage to your PC. Be sure to backup your registry beforehand. This is very important because in case the problems become complicated you can at least to restore it to the old one. You may get a registry backup either by hand or using a credible registry cleaning tool like Lotoshare Registry Cleaner. This tool is user friendly and it is easy to understant and operate.
If you want to register the Windows Update files by hand, you can take steps as follows:
- Open Start and select Search.
- From the start search box that opens, input “notepad” .
- Click Notepad.
- From the Notepad window that opens, copy and paste the following text:
regsvr32 wups2.dll /s
regsvr32 wups.dll /s
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s
regsvr32 wuapi.dll /s
regsvr32 wucltux.dll /s
regsvr32 wuwebv.dll /s
regsvr32 jscript.dll /s
regsvr32 msxml3.dll /s - Then tap File and then press Save As.
- From the Save as type drop-down menu, choose All Files.
- From the File name box that opens, input “register.bat”.
- From the Save in drop-down list, press Desktop.
- Press Save.
- On your desktop, right-click the register.bat and then press Run as administrator.
- When getting prompt message, input the administrator password.
When the Windows Update files are registered successfully, attempt to install the updates once again. If you find the error on your screen again, move on to the next section.
Method 2: Download the Windows Update Agent and Install it
The latest version of the Windows can be downloaded in the Microsoft update website. The Windows Update agent can help you supervise what kind of updates are going to be installed on your PC. If you install the Windows Update agent and often visit the Windows Update website, you can regularly update your computer.
